West Nile Fever in Israel: The Israel Health Ministry said that the death toll from the current outbreak of West Nile fever in the country has risen to 15. The total number of confirmed infection cases since the beginning of May has reached 299, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.
Although most of the cases were diagnosed in Israel’s central region, Rambam Hospital in the northern city of Haifa reported on Thursday two hospitalised patients who were infected with the virus, including a man in his 50s who is in moderate-severe condition.
According to Israel’s Maariv daily newspaper, at least 17 patients infected with West Nile fever are currently in serious condition, receiving sedation and ventilation in hospitals across central Israel.
West Nile Fever is a condition that is spread through mosquito bites and is caused by the West Nile Virus. Johns Hopkins Medicine says that the West Nile virus can infect humans, birds, mosquitoes, horses, and some other mammals. “In very rare cases, the virus can spread in transfused blood, a transplanted organ, or through the placenta to a fetus.”
West Nile virus usually doesn’t cause any symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms. However, in certain cases, when the condition becomes severe, it can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and inflammation of the brain and its surrounding membrane (meningoencephalitis); all of which might turn out to be fatal.
