What An Oncologist Says About The Newly Announced Rs 100 Drug That Prevents Cancer Recurrence?

Cancer is a leading cause of global mortality and can recur despite initial treatment success. The TATA Institute in Mumbai developed a tablet that promises to prevent recurrence and reduce treatment side effects, leveraging resveratrol and copper's properties, in clinical trails on mice. However, its effectiveness and the portrayal of such medical breakthroughs have sparked controversy.

Here's What A Doctor Says About The Rs 100 Drug That Prevents Cancer Recurrence

Recent reports state that the TATA Institute in Mumbai made a groundbreaking discovery in cancer treatment. They have developed a tablet that can prevent cancer from recurring and reduce the side effects of treatment by 50%.
Researchers and doctors claim that the drug can prevent cancer recurrence and also, reduce the side effects of treatments like radiation and chemotherapy by 50%. The tablet contains pro-oxidant resveratrol and copper, which generate oxygen radicals in the stomach and destroy chromatin particles released by dying cancer cells, preventing them from turning healthy cells cancerous.
These results were from the trials conducted on mice, which share a significant portion of their genes with humans.
Mayo Clinic says that when cancer returns after a period of remission, it’s considered a recurrence. A cancer recurrence happens because, in spite of the best efforts to rid you of your cancer, some cells from your cancer remained. These cells can grow and may cause symptoms.
Cancer cells might grow in the same place where the first cancer originated or they could be in another part of your body. These cancer cells may have been dormant for a period of time. “But for reasons that aren't understood, eventually, they continued to multiply, resulting in the reappearance of the cancer.”
However, there has been much controversy about the tablet. An oncology resident who goes by the username “The Cancer Doctor” on X (formerly Twitter) says that these claims are misleading.
In a post on X, he said, “In recent news, claims from the TATA Medical Centre suggesting that a Rs.100 tablet can prevent cancer recurrence have sparked controversy. These claims highlight the dangers of poor journalism, where sensationalizing medical breakthroughs can lead to misleading information and false hope among the public.”
He further speaks about the video in which Dr Rajendra Badwe is speaking about the research on Resveratrol and copper and its potential benefits to reduce chemotherapy side effects.
The Cancer Doctor says that it’s important to understand that Nutraceuticals like Resveratrol are not standalone treatments but rather adjuncts used alongside traditional therapies like Radiotherapy and chemotherapy to alleviate side effects. There exists an umbrella of these products like Glutathione, Benzdyamine, Arginine, and even whey protein which reduce the Chemo side effects and improves the general condition of the patient.
He adds, “Resveratrol is known for its potential anti-ageing and immune-boosting properties, its efficacy in reducing side effects of Chemotherapy is not well established until now. The studies conducted by the Tata Memorial Centre has shown promising results in certain contexts like reducing side effects of Chemotherapy, it's essential to interpret these findings within the appropriate scientific framework and not take it for granted and apply to everything.”
