Kerala Reports Suspected Monkeypox Case: Man With Travel History Exhibits Symptoms

The Bengaluru airport has begun mandatory testing for all international passengers. This precautionary measure comes after the case was detected in Delhi earlier this week, prompting authorities to act swiftly to prevent the spread of the virus.

Kochi: A suspected case of Monkey Pox has been reported in Kerala's Malappuram district, after a man who recently returned from abroad began showing symptoms of the disease. The samples of the manoth have been sent for testing, and if confirmed it will be the second case in the country.
He was initially admitted to a private hospital and later transferred to state-run Manjeri Medical College after doctors suspected monkey pox.
The man's samples have been sent to Kozhikode Medical College for testing, and the results are awaited.
The testing can determine the strain of the monkeypox.
Earlier this week, a 26-year-old man in Haryana, who recently travelled from a country suffering an outbreak, tested positive for the infection. The patient is stable and has been isolated in a facility. The patient has been confirmed for strain 'Clade II' of the Monkeypox virus.
Centre Issues Advisory
The Centre has advised the states and Union territories to screen and test all suspect mpox cases in the community, and identify isolation facilities in hospitals for both suspects and confirmed patients.
In a letter to states and Union territories earlier this month, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra asked them to prevent any undue panic amongst the masses. "While all States are requested to undertake appropriate activities to make communities aware about the disease, its mode of spread, need for timely reporting and preventive measures, it is crucial that any undue panic amongst the masses is prevented," the advisory read.
WHO Prequalifies First Monkey Pox Vaccine
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared mpox a public health emergency. The Global Health Body has added the MVA-BN vaccine, manufactured by the Bavarian Nordic A/S, to the list of prequalified vaccines against monkeypox. "The prequalification approval is expected to facilitate timely and increased access to this vital product in communities with urgent need, to reduce transmission and help contain the outbreak," the WHO has said in an official statement.
There are two distinct strains of the virus clade I and clade II. Clade I strain is responsible for the current rise of cases in Central and Eastern African countries.
Clade II strain is not part of the current public health emergency, as per the Union Health Ministry. Earlier, 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards were caused by Clade 2 strain. There is no indication of any widespread risk to the public at this time, the Union Health Ministry said.
"This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding clade 1 of mpox," read the statement.
