A brave police officer in West Bengal helped foil a Rs 4-crore robbery at a jewellery shop last week. The officer, Sub-Inspector Meghnad Mondal, was captured on CCTV camera, exchanging gunfire with the seven robbers from behind an electric pole in the Raniganj area. The police said around 20 shots were fired before the robbers ran away, leaving behind half of the stolen goods. One person has been arrested, and the police are looking for the others involved.
According to the West Bengal Police, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at around 12:15 PM when seven robbers, armed with machine guns, pistols and rifle, heads covered with helmets and towels, rushed into the jewellery shop, leaving the shopkeepers terrified. In a few moments, all seven robbers collected jewellery worth over Rs 4 crore.
West Bengal police, in a tweet on X, said that the robbers collected jewellery in about five minutes and left on two bikes.
Meanwhile, Mondal, the police officer, happened to be nearby for some personal work. Even though he wasn't in uniform, he had his police gun with him. When he saw people terrified near the jewellery shop, he suspected something fishy was going on.

What Happened Next?

Mondal hid behind a nearby electric pole and took his service revolver in hand. Just then, one of the robbers saw him, warned the others, and started shooting. Mondal bravely returned fire while ducking behind the pole. In the exchange that lasted about 30 seconds, Mondal managed to hit one of the robbers, causing him to fall to the ground.
Robbers, after seeing Mondal's shooting, decided to flee from the spot. They helped their injured partner get on a bike and rode away with about jewellery worth Rs 1.8 crore. In their haste, they left behind one of their bikes, nearly 2.5 crore rupees worth of ornaments, two backpacks and 42 rounds of fire.

However, Mondal, who was in no mood to give up, ran after the robbers. He then called nearby police station. He also alerted the Jharkhand police.
Sooner, the Jharkhand police moved into action and seized the vehicle. Suraj Singh, one of the accused, has been taken into custody. West Bengal police said that another robber Sonu Singh, was arrested from Bihar's Siwan on Monday evening.
