The flood situation in Bihar remains critical, with over a dozen districts affected by rising waters and reports of embankment breaches from at least seven locations. State Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary assured that there is no cause for panic, despite the challenges posed by the flooding.
Minister Chaudhary reported that the Kosi River is in spate, having breached its embankment near Kartarpur, inundating the villages of Kirtarpur and Ghanshyampur in Darbhanga late on Sunday. He noted that a total of seven cases of embankment breaches have been documented across the state, largely due to the release of over 10.5 lakh cusecs of water from Nepal, which has experienced its highest rainfall in 56 years.
“All rivers of north Bihar received unprecedented flow of water due to 60 hours of rainfall in Nepal two days ago. This led to breach of all previous records of highest water level (HFL). For the first time, the water level in Kosi also rose above Birpur barrage,” Chaudhary said.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the affected districts include West and East Champaran, Araria, Kishanganj, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Supaul, Siwan, Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Purnea, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saran, and Saharsa. Although water levels in smaller rivers have begun to recede, the situation remains dire for those impacted by flooding, with no fatalities reported so far.
Following the unprecedented release of 6.61 lakh cusecs from the Birpur barrage on the Kosi River—marking the highest discharge in 56 years—authorities have halted traffic near the Kosi barrage to ensure public safety. The Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak River has also recorded a significant release of 5.62 lakh cusecs, the highest since 2003.
Concerns have escalated due to reported breaches in the embankment of the Bagmati River at Madhkaul village in Sitamarhi, as well as damage to the left bank embankment of the Gandak River in West Champaran. Officials indicated that these breaches have led to floodwaters encroaching into the Valmiki Tiger Reserve. As efforts continue to manage the crisis, authorities are working to repair minor seepages that have emerged in several blocks, ensuring that immediate action is taken to prevent further inundation.
As the state grapples with this natural disaster, officials remain vigilant, monitoring water levels and coordinating relief efforts to support the affected communities.
