Chandrayaan-4, Manned Moon Mission Gets A Green Light: What You Must Know About India's Lunar Plans
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday announced the approval of several key space missions, including the Chandrayaan-4 project. The upcoming mission aims to collect samples from the lunar surface and ensure their safe return to Earth. Additionally, preparations for a manned mission to the moon have received the green light.
India is planning a manned mission to the moon by 2040 and set up its own space station.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday announced the approval of several key space missions, including the Chandrayaan-4 project. The upcoming mission aims to collect samples from the lunar surface and ensure their safe return to Earth. Additionally, preparations for a manned mission to the moon have received the green light.
"Chandrayaan-4 mission has been expanded to add more elements. The next step is to get the manned mission to the Moon. All preparatory steps towards this have been approved. Venus Orbiter Mission, Gaganyaan follow-on and Bharatiya Antariksh Station and Next Generation Launch Vehicle development also given approval," Vaishnaw said.
Speaking about the Chandrayaan-4 mission, ISRO chief S Somnath said, "Chandrayaan-4 mission is primarily targeted to demonstrate the technology to go to the moon and then come back. The coming back is a highlight of it, landing there has already been demonstrated by Chandrayaan-3. If you have to send a man to space later in 2040, a vision by our PM, we need to have confidence in technology."
The total funding needed for "Chandrayaan-4" is Rs 2,104.06 crore. This amount covers spacecraft development, two LVM3 launch missions, support from an external deep space network, special design validation tests, and the mission's goal of landing on the Moon and safely returning to Earth with lunar samples.
Venus Orbiter & Space Station Approved
Union Cabinet has approved mission to Venus-Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM)-for scientific exploration and for better understanding of Venusian atmosphere, geology and generate large amount of science data probing into its thick atmosphere. To support these future missions, a new generation launch vehicle has been approved, designed to carry a maximum payload of 30 tons to low Earth orbit.
Regarding the space station, Dr Somnath said, "For the Indian Space Station, yes, there is a timeline for that - the goal given by the Prime Minister is 2035. Our plan here is to launch the first module of Bharatiya Antariksh Station called BAS-1 by 2028."
