New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal would have to wait longer to walk out of jail as the Delhi High Court has temporarily halted his release till it hears the Enforcement Directorate plea. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the ED, has challenged the trial court before the high court contending that the agency was not given a proper opportunity to argue its case.

The Delhi CM, currently lodged in Tihar, is likely to walk out of the jail on Friday. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21.

7. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, appearing for the ED, submitted that co-accused Chanpreet Singh received huge cash amounts from entrepreneurs and paid hotel bills for Kejriwal's stay. The counsel claimed that the investigation by ED is based on concrete evidence.
8. After Arvind Kejriwal got the bail, AAP wrote on X in Hindi, "Truth can be troubled, but not defeated. Rejecting all objections of BJP's ED, the Hon'ble Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister." Delhi Minister Atishi called Arvind Kejriwal getting bail, "Satyamev Jayate (Truth alone triumphs in English)."
9. The Delhi Chief Minister had been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10 in view of Lok Sabha polls and was told to surrender on June 2. He was asked not visit the Office of the Chief Minister and the Delhi Secretariat.
10. Notably, Arvind Kejriwal is the second AAP leader to be granted bail in the liquor policy case after Sanjay Singh. Manish Sisodia is still lodged in Tihar Jail.

What Is the Case About?

The AAP government in 2021 initiated a series of changes in its liquor excise policy. These adjustments included the cessation of government-owned liquor stores with the issuance of store operation licenses to private entities, lowering the legal drinking age from 25 to 21 years, separate registration criteria for different liquor brands, and taking into account factors such as pricing and sales performance in areas outside of Delhi.
The Delhi government also proposed a significant increase in the annual liquor vending license fee, raising it from Rs eight lakh to Rs 75 lakh.

Following the allegations, the AAP government scrapped the policy. But Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena initiated an investigation into the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 on the basis of the Delhi Chief Secretary's report.
The ED had alleged that the AAP used proceeds of crime in the 2022 Goa Assembly polls.
