Chennai: The Supreme Court in a hearing on the eve of the popular Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi has dismissed an appeal filed by Ganesh idol artisan and trader Prakash against division bench of Madras HC staying sale of idols made of plaster of Paris.
The stay was imposed at a special sitting on Sunday. Earlier, a single judge bench had allowed the sale.
This ruling means that idols of Lord Ganesha or Ganapati Bappa that are made of plaster of paris can neither be sold nor installed in Tamil Nadu.
Tweet by Chennai Police:
Earlier last week, the Greater Chennai City Police instructed all Vinayaka (also called Vinayagar - another name for Ganpati) Chaturthi festival organisers, who are planning to install idols and conduct processions for the festival, that no hoardings or banners or posters of any political parties or religious leaders will be allowed to be placed at worship points.
Idol height must not exceed 10 feet base up. Avoid installing idols near places of worship. Bursting of firecrackers and chanting that may hurt the sentiments of other religions is not allowed. Idols must be immersed peacefully. - Chennai Police order for Ganesh Chaturthi.
The police have also ruled that landowners where Vinayagar idols are going to be installed must have obtained permission from local bodies concerned, Highway Department or Government Department.
Additionally, there is a strict ban against installation of idols near places of Worship, Hospitals, Educational institutions and it is necessary that two volunteers should be deputed on a 24-hour rotation to ensure the safety of the idols.
No sloganeering or bursting of crackers when the idols are being taken for immersion.
All these orders are being seen akin to a crackdown on people aligned with a particular ideology.
