New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday filed a money laundering case against Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from Lok Sabha last year over cash-for-query allegations.
A probe report by Parliamentary Ethics Committee had held Moitra accountable for accepting gifts and illegal gratification for asking questions in Lok Sabha.
The case has been registered on the basis of FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The ED action comes days after the 49-year-old politician skipped the summons by the agency that asked her to appear for questioning in its Delhi office.
Notably, ED had issued summons to Mahua Moitra along with businessman Darshan Hiranandani for questioning in a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) contravention case.
Last week, CBI had conducted searches at Mahua Moitra's Karimpur residence in Nadia district of West Bengal in connection with the alleged cash-for-query case. Earlier in the day, the probe agency officials conducted searches at her Krishnanagar residence in Kolkata.
“After careful evaluation and consideration of the entire material on record, there remains no doubt regarding the fact that the allegations leveled against the Respondent Public Servant (RPS), most of which are supported by cogent evidence, are extremely serious in nature, especially in view of the position held by her. Therefore, in our considered opinion, a deeper probe is required to establish the truth," Lokpal said as quoted by ANI.
"This is vital in view of the position and status held by the RPS at the relevant point of time. Whatever be the position held, a public servant is bound to exercise probity in the discharge of his/her duties as a public servant," the statement added.

What Mahua Moitra Said

The former Trinamool Congress MP took to X and said, "The CBI came home and to my election offices today. Were very polite. Searched. Found nothing. Meanwhile Saayoni Ghosh and I still searching for BJP candidates against us." Notably, Saayoni Ghosh is the president of West Bengal Trinamool Youth Congress.
Mahua Moitra was expelled from Parliament on December 8, 2023, following a vote in the House on a recommendation by the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee that recommended her expulsion over the “cash-for-query” allegation.
The controversy erupted when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Moitra of involvement in a bribery scandal. Dubey filed a complaint with the Lokpal, alleging that Moitra accepted bribes in exchange for posing questions in Parliament. The accusation claimed that Moitra shared her Lok Sabha login credentials with Dubai-based industrialist Darshan Hiranandani.
