Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday reacted to Congress Lok Sabha MP DK Suresh's controversial remarks. Notably, Suresh, the brother of Karnataka's Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, sparked a controversy by saying there may be a call for a separate country for South India.
Responding to the Congress MP's separatist suggestion, the Karnataka CM said one can not ask for a separate nation. "You cannot ask for a separate nation for all this. In a federal state you can ask for what belongs to you but not for a separate nation," stated.
Earlier, in the day, while speaking to reporters about the budget, Suresh said, "It will be enough if they give us the money they (the Centre) owe us. Today, our request is that taxes collected as GST, customs and direct taxes must reach us. We are seeing a lot of wrong being done to South India."
"Our share in the developmental funds is being diverted to North India. In all matters, there is wrong being done to us. If we don’t condemn it, we may reach a situation where we are forced to demand a separate country. The Hindi states are imposing on us," he added.
Suresh's controversial statement:
Suresh's comments drew flak from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). R Ashoka, BJP's Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, said that such comments led to the partition of the country.
“On one hand Rahul Gandhi is doing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, on the other hand INC MP and KPCC chief DK Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh calls for Bharat Todo. This is exactly the same mindset of INC which led to the partition of India,” Ashok tweeted.
"If an elected MP who has taken oath to protect the sovereignty and integrity of India calls for dividing India, isn’t it a violation of his oath?" the BJP leader tweeted tagging Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh. He also tagged Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in his post, stating, "Isn’t this an insult to Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution?”
Karnataka BJP leader S Prakash also demanded the arrest of Suresh. Notably, Suresh is the Lok Sabha MP from the Bengaluru Rural seat.
