Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday directed the Haryana government to open the Shambhu border within one week. The border connecting Punjab and Haryana was allegedly blocked by protesting farmers and closed by the Haryana government.
The High Court also asked farmer unions to maintain law and order situation as the border remains blocked for over five months now.
On July 6, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in Punjab & Haryana High Court today, seeking directions to allow passing of pubic transports and vehicles from Shambhu border.
The closure of the border has been causing great difficulty to common people as NH 44 is considered the lifeline of the region as it connects the national capital New Delhi to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

'Causing Inconvenience'

On July3, Haryana transport minister Aseem Goel urged Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to convince protesting farmers. Farmers began their protest at Shambhu on the Haryana-Punjab border on February 13, resulting in the closure of the border since then.
Aseem Goel said, “The farmers halted traffic (on NH-44) after starting their Andolan about five-and-a-half months ago near Shambhu village situated on the border of Ambala district. The border has been closed since the start of the farmers’ agitation, which has caused inconvenience to the general public and especially businessmen of Ambala are facing difficulties in doing their business.”
“The Centre government should hold talks with the agitating farmers and pacify them to open the road through (Shambhu) border. While this will provide relief to the people living nearby, it will also ease the businessmen to carry out their work”, said Aseem Goel.

Who Closed The Border?

Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher had claimed the farmers had not blocked the highway, but it was the government which had stopped their Delhi Chalo march in February by putting up barricades.
Notably, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are leading the Delhi Chalo march by farmers to press the government to accept their demands.
The farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 when their march was stopped by the security forces.
