'Shocked': PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar Mourn Death Of Iran President Ebrahim Raisi In Helicopter Crash

PM Modi hailed Iran's President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi's "contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship." Raisi and his foreign minister died when their helicopter crashed as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today mourned the death of Iran's President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi and hailed his "contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship." Raisi and his foreign minister died when their helicopter crashed as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog.
The PM wrote on X, "Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow."
EAM S Jaishankar also offered his condolences to the family and said that India stands with Iran in this time of tragedy.
The EAM wrote, "Deeply shocked to hear of the passing away of Iran’s President Dr Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash. Recall my many meetings with them, most recently in January 2024. Our condolences to their families. We stand with the people of Iran at time of this tragedy."

Iran President Killed In Crash

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials died after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed after losing contact approximately 30 minutes into the flight. This sparked immediate concerns and a massive search and rescue operation.
Raisi, 63, along with Iran's foreign minister, and other officials was on his way back from Azerbaijain when helicopter crashed near the border on Sunday. Officials said that bad weather caused the crash, and also impeded the rescue operations that went on for over 12 hours. All passengers onboard the helicopter died in the crash, the state news agency has said.

What's Next For Iran?

Here's what Iran's constitution says happens if a president is incapacitated or dies in office:
- According to article 131 of the Islamic Republic's constitution, if a president dies in office the first vice president takes over, with the confirmation of the supreme leader, who has the final say in all matters of state.
- A council consisting of the first vice president, the speaker of parliament and the head of the judiciary must arrange a election for a new president within a maximum period of 50 days.
