Srinagar: After ending 37 years of election boycott, Jamaat-E-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JeI) which was banned by the central government in 2019 under anti-terror law, said that the party would contest polls ‘if the ban is revoked’.
Speaking exclusively to Times Now in Srinagar, JeI top Ghulam Qadir Wani said that they believe democratic process is the viable route for resolving issues.
Ghulam Qadir Wani, who heads consultative committee of JeI and is currently holding talks with New Delhi, said that the organisation always supported democratic process.
Wani, who casted his vote along with other leaders and workers during Srinagar Parliamentary elections denied to have supported militancy in Kashmir.
“We were always with democratic process. In between, there was bloodshed and we hadn’t any solid defence system that is why we stayed back but now we want peace and prosperity and we don’t want more youth to be killed.
Demcractic process is the only viable route for the resolution of issues that is why we decided participate in this process and casted votes,” Wani said.
Ghulam Qadir Wani said that the central advisory council, which takes policy decisions, has decided to participate in the elections. “If the ban is removed then we will participate in elections” he added.
Wani said that they have briefed New Delhi and made them aware of the fact that JeI doesn’t believe and support underground (militancy) activities.
Jamaat-E-Islami Jammu and Kashmir, a leading socio-political organisation, was founded in 1953, contested elections till 1987.
The organisation is facing allegations of having supported terror outfits during nineties.
In February 2019, Jamaat-E-Islami Jammu and Kashmir was banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Prior to ban, several JeI Leaders and Workers were arrested. In February, 2024 ban was renewed for another five years as result of which several commercial properties and offices across Jammu and Kashmir have been seized.
