Varanasi: Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar gifted Prime Minister Narendra Modi an Indian cricket team shirt which had “NAMO” written on the back on Saturday when he joined Modi as he laid the foundation stone of a new cricket stadium in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Apart from Tendulkar, cricket legends Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present at the occasion.
“This stadium in the city of 'Mahadev' will be dedicated to 'Mahadev' himself. The sportspersons here will benefit from the construction of an international stadium in Kashi. This stadium will become the star of Purvanchal region”, Modi said at the event in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi, as per ANI.
The Uttar Pradesh government led by CM Adityanath has spent Rs 121 crores on land acquisition for the construction of the International Cricket Stadium. Moreover, the BCCI will spend Rs 330 crores on the stadium's construction. Speaking on this occasion, Adityanath said, “PM Modi is laying the foundation stone for International Cricket Stadium Varanasi by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Uttar Pradesh for the first time. I welcome PM Modi on behalf of every sports enthusiast in the state.”
He added, “In Varanasi, a stadium is under construction with the help of the Smart City Mission of the Central Government. This is the third International stadium of Uttar Pradesh and the first to be constructed under the supervision of BCCI. It will provide a platform to the cricket enthusiasts of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. I would like to thank BCCI and PM Modi for giving this gift to UP.”
The stadium is expected to be ready by December 2025 and will be built near the Ring Road in the Rajatalab area, PTI said in a report. It will have a capacity of 30,00 spectators and seven pitches, as per the report.
