New Delhi: Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin has made history by becoming the first woman officer to take charge as the Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). She is now responsible for overseeing medical policy matters for the Indian Armed Forces, directly reporting to the Ministry of Defence.
A trailblazer in military medicine, Vice Admiral Sarin brings decades of experience to the role. Prior to this historic appointment, she held several prestigious positions, including Director General of Medical Services for both the Navy and Air Force, and Director & Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, where she also completed her medical education.
Commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1985, Vice Admiral Sarin is an MD in Radiodiagnosis from AFMC and holds a Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Her expertise extends to advanced training in Gamma Knife Surgery from the University of Pittsburgh, marking her as a leader in medical technology and treatment.
Her 38-year career spans across all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces. She served in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, holding various academic and administrative positions, including Commanding Officer of INHS Asvini and Command Medical Officer of the Southern and Western Naval Commands. Notably, she was the Professor & Head of Radiation Oncology at Army Hospital (R&R) and AFMC Pune.
Vice Admiral Sarin’s exemplary service has earned her several honors. She was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2024 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021 for her dedication to patient care and service. Additionally, she has received commendations from the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief for her distinguished contributions.
In a recent recognition of her expertise, she was appointed as a member of the National Task Force by the Supreme Court, where she will help establish safe working conditions for medical professionals. A champion of gender equality in the Armed Forces, Vice Admiral Sarin has been a leading voice in motivating young women to join the military, embodying the Nari Shakti initiative of the Indian government.
Her appointment as the 46th DGAFMS is a landmark achievement, and she continues to inspire the next generation of medical professionals and women leaders across the country.
