New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed strong disapproval over the recent detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and hundreds of Ladakhis who peacefully marched to Delhi to advocate for their environmental and constitutional rights. He described the detentions as “unacceptable,” questioning why elderly citizens were being apprehended at the capital's borders for standing up for Ladakh’s future. Gandhi warned that, like the farmers' protests, this situation would ultimately be overcome, asserting that the government would have to listen to the voices of the people of Ladakh.
Taking to X, Gandhi wrote, "The detention of Sonam Wangchuk ji and hundreds of Ladakhis peacefully marching for environmental and constitutional rights is unacceptable. Why are elderly citizens being detained at Delhi’s border for standing up for Ladakh’s future? Modi ji, like with the farmers, this ‘Chakravyuh’ will be broken, and so will your arrogance. You will have to listen to Ladakh’s voice."
Around 150 individuals from Ladakh, including Wangchuk, were detained by Delhi Police as they attempted to march in support of Sixth Schedule status for the Union Territory on Monday. The police indicated that the detainees would be taken to various police stations along the city border. Notably, women participating in the march were not detained. This police action followed the imposition of prohibitory orders banning gatherings of five or more people in north and central Delhi to prevent potential disruptions.
Ladakh bandh called by Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Apex Body, Leh (ABL) against the detention of Activist Sonam Wangchuk in Delhi.
Wangchuk, in a statement, noted that they initially believed they were being escorted by police vehicles as they approached the capital. However, it soon became evident that their march would not be allowed. "As we are approaching Delhi, it appears we are not being escorted, we are being detained," he told PTI. He added that approximately 1,000 police personnel had been deployed at the Delhi border, and heavy security was evident at the Ladakh Bhawan in Delhi, as well as in areas populated by Ladakhi students. "It appears they don't want to allow this padyatra to take place," he remarked.
The 'Delhi Chalo Padyatra' was organised by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), who have been advocating for statehood, the extension of the Constitution's Sixth Schedule, early recruitment processes, a public service commission for Ladakh, and separate Lok Sabha seats for the Leh and Kargil districts over the past four years.
In response to the growing tensions, Delhi Police announced a ban on gatherings of five or more persons, as well as protests, in central and bordering areas for the next six days, citing law and order concerns. An order from Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora imposed Section 163 (formerly Section 144) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in New Delhi, North, and Central districts, effective until October 5.
This prohibitory order was enacted in light of multiple calls for protests from various organisations, significant movements of VVIPs and dignitaries, and upcoming events like Gandhi Jayanti and elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. The police expressed concerns about potential disturbances to public order in the capital, particularly in areas with high migrant populations.
