S Jaishankar, in an exclusive interview with Times Group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar reveals PM Modi's two phone calls to halt Ukraine war to help rescue stranded Indians

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in an exclusive interview with Times Group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar, revealed how Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened to "stop the (Ukraine) war", not once but twice, with a phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is the first time Jaishankar has specifically outlined the instances when India managed to pause the conflict in Ukraine to facilitate the evacuation of stranded Indian nationals.
'Yes, Ukraine War Rukwa Diya'
"If you ask me about stopping the war, then my answer would be yes. I am a witness of the same. I can give you the date. I can give you time. I can give you how long. I can tell you how. And I can tell you for whom," S Jaishankar said.
He revealed further, "This has been done twice. Firstly, it was done on March 5 in Kharkiv. Our students were on their way to the nearest safe zone. Heavy shelling was taking place. Our Prime Minister called President Putin and asked him to stop the shelling to make way for our students. Upon the Prime Minister's request, the Russian Army stopped the shelling and our teachers could reach the safe zone."
Detailing another critical incident, Jaishankar said: "Another crucial incident took place on March 8. A three-way fight was going on between Ukraine, Russia, and local militia. Our students wanted to leave that area and we tried to stop the conflict. But, our efforts couldn't see the light. Firing resumed as soon our students entered the bus. Students had to leave the bus and return to their hostel. So we went to the Prime Minister and told him to boost the morale of the students. We suggested that people from Delhi should go there and speak to the students. Two of our senior officers were sent to that region. We wanted to stop the conflict and make way for our students. When we explained to PM Modi, he spoke to President Putin and President Zelenskyy and came to an arrangement with the local militia and stopped the firing. We made a sanitized pathway and our students left."
Jaishankar's remarks comes just two weeks before the Lok Sabha election results and sheds light on India's diplomatic maneuvers during the Ukraine crisis.
During the interview, Jaishankar also discussed his greatest diplomatic challenge and how India managed to bring together the West and Russia at the G-20 summit in Delhi.
He also highlighted the shifting dynamics of global power, stating, "The era of Western supremacy is coming to an end." He criticized the Western media for supporting a certain ecosystem in India that undermines the country's achievements.
