Vice Admiral Arti Sarin has made history by taking over as the Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), becoming the first woman officer to hold this prestigious position. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for women in the Indian armed forces.
On Tuesday, Vice Admiral Sarin assumed her new role, overseeing overall medical policy matters for the Armed Forces under the direct purview of the Ministry of Defence. With nearly 40 years of service, she is now the highest-ranking woman officer to have served in the Indian Armed Forces.
Currently the Director General of Medical Services for the Navy, Vice Admiral Sarin has also had notable experience within the Army and Air Force, showcasing her unique capability and versatility. As the senior-most medical officer in the armed forces, she will represent all medical issues to Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
A cancer specialist, Vice Admiral Sarin began her career in 1985 as an army officer and has achieved the rank of air marshal in the Indian Air Force. Her ascent to the position of DGAFMS is a remarkable achievement in a field where three-star female officers remain rare.
In July this year, she was she was honoured with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) by President Droupadi Murmu. Ministry of Defence, taking to X, wrote, "Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, a true symbol of #NariShakti has uniquely served in all three branches of the Armed Forces.
