Urvashi Rautela's brand new look
Urvashi Rautela grabbed headlines yet again, this time for making a statement at the Global Fashion Festival 2024. Clad in a traditional Manipuri garment made of 24k real gold, her attire beautifully highlighted the essence of Manipuri fashion on an international stage.
For the unversed, Urvashi is currently gaining massive appreciation for wearing a Manipuri Potloi for her recent stint. Designed by renowned Manipuri designer Robert Naorem, the Manipuri garment expertly showcased the rich cultural heritage of Manipur.
What is a potloi?
A distinctive cylindrical skirt, the potloi is crafted from thick fibers and bamboo, layered with satin. What sets it apart from other bridal attire is its elaborate embellishments, featuring intricate threadwork, sequins, and mirrors. The motifs along the hemline require painstaking craftsmanship, often taking several days to complete.
The skirt on the garment is cinched with a decorative belt, and a sheer veil drapes elegantly around the wearer, complemented by a half-sleeved blouse. Urvashi’s potloi was a rich red, adorned with exquisite gold embroidery, creating a striking contrast from the traditional green blouse and white shawl typically worn by brides.
History of Manipuri Potloi
The potloi carries a deep historical significance, tracing back to the Meitei kingdom. It was introduced as a dance costume by Meidingu Bhagyachandra Maharaj during his reign in the late 18th century and gradually became a symbol of bridal attire within the Meitei community.
The craft of potloi making is a treasured tradition, passed down through generations, often taught informally within families. This intricate art form relies on collective effort, as creating a potloi involves extensive handiwork, turning the process into a communal activity that preserves this ancient craft.
