Aamras, the world's best mango dish

India isn’t quiet about its love for mangoes and we think we have cornered the market on the best ones in the world. And the world seems to agree? In a recent poll on the online voting platform TasteAtlas, they rounded up the top 10 mango dishes of the world and Indian dishes occupied two of the spots with Mango Chutney at five and Aamras coming in at number one.
Aamras, which is essentially mango pulp, placing first is a testament to the innate flavour of Indian mangoes, whereas Mango Chutney is an ode to the country’s love of pickles and chutneys, although of course there are a wide variety of mango pickles to enjoy. From classic achaar to sweet Gujarati chundo, Mango Chutney is a wide world of flavours.
Also on the list are a selection of Thai, Chinese, Indonesian and Phillipino dishes. The comment section was quick to point out the lack of ‘Turkish dishes’ – in reference to an ongoing joke that TasteAtlas seems to feature Turkish cuisine more prominently than any others – but given that Asia is the native home to the fruit, this roundup seems in line with the reality.

Check out the full list of the World’s Top 10 Mango Dishes below:

1. Aamras
This Maharashtrian speciality is made with pureed mango pulp that can be eaten as is, but can also be enhanced with sugar, jaggery, saffron or cardamom. 2. Khao Niao Mamuang

3. Sorbetes

5. Mango Chutney
While as mentioned, there are a lot of variations on the term ‘mango chutney’, the one that’s most commonly eaten in India is more of a pickle than a chutney, made with raw mangoes, spices, salt and vinegar. A chutney would more accurately describe a sweeter version made with ripe mangoes, chilli, ginger-garlic and spices along with jaggery, cooked down into a sweeter condiment.
6. Mango Pomelo Sago
Although commonly enjoyed in Hong Kong, this dish originated in Singapore in 1984 and is made with mango, pomelo, sago (sabudana), whole milk or evaporated milk, and coconut milk as a refreshing summer dessert to be served cold.
7. Chinese Mango Pudding (Mangguo Buding)
Heuhng mong dung boh deen is a traditional Chinese mango pudding served as part of dim sum. Made from puréed mango, sugar, gelatin, and milk, the mixture is chilled in ramekins before serving. Often garnished with mint leaves or mango pieces, it is especially popular on hot summer nights.
8. Rujak Cingur
Indonesia’s Rujak makes a second appearance, this time for the Rujak cingur variety which includes the slightly unusual addition of animal muzzle. The fruits and vegetables are served boiled or raw with a spicy Indonesian dressing made of shrimp paste, peanuts, sugar, and chili.
9. Baobing
With a history dating back over 1,000 years to the 7th century this simple dessert of finely shaved ice topped with fresh fruit, condensed milk, flavoured sugar syrup, mung beans, and peanuts is popular during hot summer days in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

10. Mamuang Nam Pla Wan

Raw mangoes also find celebration on the list in the form of this Thai snack where slices of green mango are served with a sweet and savoury dipping sauce called nam pla wan – a combination of fish sauce, shrimp paste, chilli and sugar for a tangy, pungent snack.
