Shahdol: In a shocking incident, a one-and-a-half-month-old baby was allegedly branded with iron rods 51 times in the Hardi village of Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district. This was done to cure the child’s pneumonia and respiratory illness. The baby is now fighting for his life at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Shahdol.
According to details, the baby was having issues in breathing and had a bloated stomach. Seeing this, his father, Pradeep Baiga, chose superstition over science and got him branded with hot iron rods 51 times. The rods were jabbed into the boy’s stomach, back, limbs and face.
Reportedly, this is the second time that the bay was branded with hot iron rods.
Meanwhile, Baiga said the child was suffering and so the elders in his family, who believe in superstition, decided to get the boy branded with rods. However, this worsened his condition and so he had to be hospitalised.
Notably, this type of superstition is practised in the tribal region of Shahdol and villagers firmly believe that it can cure a child.
This is not the first time that such an incident has been reported in the district.
In February, it was reported that two children died within four days in the district after they were allegedly branded with hot iron rods as part of a treatment to cure ailments. The superstitious practice has claimed the lives of more than 10 children in Shahdol.
