Lucknow: A couple in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti allegedly committed suicide shortly after the wife was gang-raped in their village. The man and his wife reportedly killed themselves after consuming poison, the police said on Saturday.
The Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR in the matter. Police confirmed to news agency PTI that two men have been arrested in connection with the gang rape and subsequent deaths of the duo.
Basti’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Gopal Krishana, said on Saturday that the 30-year-old man and his 27-year-old wife consumed poison during the early hours of Thursday. The wife passed away on Friday at a hospital in Gorakhpur, while the husband passed away the same day.
As per the allegations levied by the couple's relatives, the wife was gang raped by the two men in her house which comes under the jurisdiction of the Rudhauli police station area on the intervening night of September 20 and 21.
Couple Shot Video Before Alleged Suicide
In a video accessed by police officials, the man and his wife were seen taking the names of the accused before allegedly dying by suicide.
Police registered an FIR against the two accused under sections 376 D, related to gang-rape, and 306, abetment to suicide, of the Indian Penal Code, after receiving a complaint from the man’s brother.
Police have arrested the accused, Adarsh, 25 years old, and Triloki, 45 years old, and an investigation is underway," said SP.
The couple's children told the police that on Friday morning, as they were getting ready for school, their parents told them they had taken poison and were going to die.
Two sons who are eight and six and a daughter who is one year old make up the family's three kids.
The police's preliminary investigation revealed that the rape incident is connected to a land dispute between the accused and the deceased.
