Mumbai: After a brief lull in monsoon showers, moderate rainfall has returned to Mumbai and its suburbs, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas. IMD has issued a yellow alert for thundershowers and lightning in the financial capital.
The rains have brought some relief from the heat, causing a drop in minimum temperatures, which had been around 30 degrees Celsius last week. On Thursday, the minimum temperature in the island city was 24.8 degrees Celsius, while the suburbs recorded 25.4 degrees Celsius. Civic officials reported that some parts received triple-digit rainfall in the 24 hours ending Thursday morning.
According to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official, heavy rains lashed areas from Malad to Dahisar in the western suburbs starting Wednesday morning. Several localities received over 100 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Thursday. The highest rainfall was recorded in the Eksar area of Borivali (West) at 140.6 mm, followed by Magathane with 139 mm, Borivali (East) with 133.6 mm, Dahisar with 130.4 mm, and Malvani with 126.4 mm. Mumbai is expected to experience a stretch of rainy weather over the coming days, according to the forecast. From June 21 to June 24, the city will have generally cloudy skies with moderate rain, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 33 degrees Celsius. On June 21, the temperature will be between 26 and 33 degrees, followed by 25 to 32 degrees on June 22, and 24 to 32 degrees on both June 23 and June 24.
The rainfall is expected to intensify on June 25 and June 26, with temperatures dropping further. On June 25, the temperature will range from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, accompanied by rain. On June 26, the temperature is forecasted to drop to between 23 and 29 degrees Celsius, with continued rainfall. Residents are advised to be prepared for persistent rainy conditions throughout this period.
In comparison, the island city and eastern suburbs saw less rainfall. Pratiksha Nagar in the island city recorded 36.6 mm of rain from Wednesday 8 am to Thursday 8 am, while Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs received 48 mm.
According to BMC's disaster management department, Mumbai's island city, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs recorded average rainfall of 19.44 mm, 29.56 mm, and 59.30 mm, respectively, in the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Thursday. Between 8 am and 6 pm on Thursday, the island city recorded 1.76 mm of rain, eastern suburbs had 12.46 mm, and western suburbs received 7.75 mm.
Despite the heavy rainfall, Mumbai did not report any major waterlogging or disruption in suburban train services. However, there were 15 incidents of tree or branch falls, two house collapses, and two short circuits reported, but no injuries were recorded.
Neighbouring Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts experienced more intense rain, with the IMD issuing an 'orange alert' for these areas, indicating heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during heavy rains.
