Mumbai: Mumbai's famous Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal unveiled the first look of Lalbaugcha Raja 2023 ahead of the Ganeshotsav.
Lalbaugcha Raja, situated in the Lalbaug area of Mumbai, is the city's most famous Ganpati idol. Every year, thousands of people gather to catch a glimpse of Lalbaugcha Raja during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. This year, the Ganeshotsav festival starts on September 19 and will continue for 10 days.
The Lalbaugcha Raja Ganeshotsav Mandal, which has been around for over eight decades, attracts devotees not only from Maharashtra but also from other states. The idol of Lalbaugcha Raja is crafted on-site, so there is no procession for its arrival.
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most celebrated festivals in Maharashtra, and Lalbaugcha Raja is one of the most renowned mandals. It was established in 1934 and has since drawn thousands of devotees, including Bollywood celebrities and politicians, during its 10-day-long festival.
Devotees often spend hours waiting in long queues to pay their respects to Lord Ganesha. To ensure safety, the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganeshotsav Mandal has secured insurance coverage worth Rs 26.54 crore from New India Assurance this year. This comprehensive policy covers various risks, including fire, theft, accidents, stampedes, acts of terrorism, and even food poisoning caused by prasad.
In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mandal celebrated 'Arogya Utsav' for devotees, featuring activities such as blood donation camps and plasma donation drives in collaboration with the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
