Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced new guidelines to promote the use of the Marathi language in official communications, mandating its use in all administrative functions. This directive, issued by Commissioner Yogesh Mhase, aligns with a state government initiative aimed at establishing Marathi as the official language in public offices and corporations.

Background of the Directive

The directive follows a reference from the Marathi Language Department and aligns with the Maharashtra Official Language Act of 1964. The PMRDA's instructions stem from previous government orders aimed at increasing the use of Marathi at the administrative level.

Key Instructions for Official Communication

1. Official Correspondence in Marathi: The PMRDA has mandated that all correspondence with the public, including letters and other administrative documents, should be conducted in Marathi.

2. Forms and Notices: All samples, forms, permits, and various types of records used within the office must be available in Marathi. Additionally, any notices, comments, reports, and meeting minutes should also be published in Marathi.

3. Name Representation: When writing names of individuals, officials, or employees in Marathi on nameplates or correspondence, it is required to write them in Marathi without transliterating English initials. For instance, instead of writing "H. N. Apte," it should be written as "?. ??. ????." Furthermore, designations must also be in Marathi, and all signatures on documents should be made in Devanagari script.

4. Invitations for Events: Invitations for events organised by the PMRDA must be issued in Marathi. If necessary, invitations can be printed in both Marathi and English.

5. Advertisements and Tenders: Advertisements and tenders issued by the PMRDA must be published in at least two Marathi newspapers. All advertisements in Marathi newspapers should also be in the Marathi language.

6. Website Information: The information published on the PMRDA website should be available in Marathi. It is crucial to ensure that information regarding the authority reaches a wider audience at national and international levels in Marathi.

Public Engagement and Accessibility

The authority encourages all officials and employees to implement these instructions diligently to foster an environment where Marathi is the primary language of communication.
