As October approaches, the vibrant season of Durga Puja looms on the horizon—the most important festival for Bengali Hindus, also known as "Pujo." This five-day celebration resonates deeply across West Bengal and beyond. This year, the festivities will take place from October 8 to October 13, the dates that followers of goddess Durga are eagerly waiting for! As they say, Maa Asche, that means "mother goddess is coming".
During this auspicious period, idols of the Hindu goddess Durga—with three piercing eyes and ten outstretched arms—can be seen in lavishly decorated pandals, each following a unique and creative theme. Maa Durga's idols are sculpted with love and reverence by specialised idol makers, and Bengalis wait all year for her arrival.
Her elaborately decorated pavilion, where she sits, becomes a meeting place for art, spirituality, and heartfelt devotion. Each idol depicts the goddess in her fierce warrior form, brandishing a spear and club as she vanquishes the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. This age-old narrative resonates especially today, reminding us of the moral battles we face. Worship is just one part of the celebratory ritual, where the community gathers to honour Ma Durga in all her glory. She is honoured with a devotional dance performed to the beats of a Dhak, with dancers holding terracotta goblets filled with dhuno, coconut husks, and charcoal that is lit up with fire, emitting a pure aroma and smoke. This is known as Dhunuchi Naach.
Durga Puja is not merely a celebration of the goddess's homecoming but also a time to honour her four children—Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya—who accompany her on this spiritual journey.
Durga Puja in Kolkata is on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
