Every year, the festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik. This year, the fast will be observed on October 20, 2024. On this day, women worship Karwa Mata for happiness and prosperity in married life, while also observing a nirjala (without water) fast for the long life and good health of their husband. The moon plays a special role in this festival, as women break their fast only after sighting the moon.
In Hinduism, this festival symbolises the love between husband and wife and enhances their bond of trust and affection. This year, a special astrological alignment involving Vyatipaat Yoga, Krittika Nakshatra, and Vishhti, Bav, and Balav Karan is taking place. Worshiping Karwa Mata during this time is believed to bestow blessings of good fortune
If you are observing this fast for the first time after marriage, be sure to keep these important points in mind for a complete and fulfilling worship experience.
Dress in Full Bridal Attire
If this is your first Karwa Chauth fast, participate in the rituals dressed in full bridal adornments. Additionally, make sure to apply henna on your hands. It is believed that being fully adorned during the worship brings blessings of good fortune.
Observe a Nirjala Fast
According to traditional beliefs, Karwa Chauth is observed as a nirjala fast. This means you should not drink water from sunrise until moonrise. However, you can eat 'sargi' (a pre-dawn meal) during the Brahma Muhurat.
Wear Your Wedding Outfit
The first Karwa Chauth after marriage is very special for all women. Typically, women wear a red saree on this occasion, which is considered very auspicious. However, you can also wear your wedding attire, as it brings blessings of happiness and prosperity.
Listen to the Vrat Katha
On this day, women should definitely listen to the 'Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha'. After the story, it’s important to seek blessings from the elders. This is believed to enhance your fortune.
Avoid Tamasic Foods
The fast is always broken after sighting the moon. You should only eat after offering water to the moon. During the fasting meal, make sure to avoid tamasic foods (those that are overly spicy or heavy).
