Navdeep Singh, who lived with dwarfism, faced not only the typical challenges of training but also harsh jeers from bystanders during his upbringing in a village in Haryana’s Panipat district. But he overcame all odds to clinch a gold at the Paralympics 2024 in Paris. On Saturday, after transforming those insults into his greatest achievement on the sport’s grandest stage, the four-foot-four-inch para athlete voiced his concerns about the disrespect faced by individuals whose bodies deviate from conventional standards, and called for "equal respect" for them.
The Indian javelin thrower secured an unprecedented gold medal in the F41 classification at the Paris Paralympic Games.
“Humein bhi utna darja milna chahiye, maine bhi desh ka naam roshan kiya hai (We deserve the same respect, I too have brought glory to the country,” Navdeep said in a video shared by Paralympic Committee Of India.
“My aim is to educate society that we also exist in this world and nobody should make fun of us, which is often the case. We also can make our country proud'', he told.
“There were a lot of hurdles initially but I kept at it and strengthened myself, which led to good results. This is the biggest moment of my life, I feel proud to sign off with a gold medal,” the 23-year old further added.
His personal best throw of 47.32m initially put him in second place, but he was awarded gold after the top performer, Iran's Sadegh Beit Sayah, was disqualified for repeatedly displaying an inappropriate flag. This moment was pivotal for Navdeep, who proved his critics wrong.
