The Singapore Open 2024 witnessed a familiar script unfold in the women's singles arena as World No. 3 Carolina Marin of Spain defeated India's Pv Sindhu in straight games ( PV Sindhu 21-13, 11-21, 20-22 Carolina Marin).
Sindhu, who had progressed to the women's singles second round, last won a BWF title in Singapore two years back.
Against Marin, she continued her underwhelming streak as the Spaniard beat her for the sixth time in a row.
However, PV Sindhu did assert her dominance in the opening game and cruised to a 21-13 win in 18 minutes. She quickly attacked the shuttle, dished out the overhead variations, and stuck to her smashes, which helped her dominate Marin.
However, Marin roared back and took the second game comfortably at 21-11.
Sindhu seemed to be back in the game in the decider with a big 7-2 lead. But the Spaniard kept pegging back. Trailing 14-17, Marin clawed back to make it 19-20 and finally took the game 20-22.
Both Sindhu and Marin remain top contenders for Olympic gold. But the Singapore Open result will only add pressure on the Indian as she gears up for the biggest stage. Sindhu will be determined to break the streak and rewrite the narrative.
While Sindhu's performance at the Singapore Open did not yield the desired outcome, this result should serve as a valuable lesson for her on her journey to the Paris Olympics, prompting her to return with a renewed strategy to challenge Marin's dominance and potentially claim the coveted Olympic gold if they meet on the biggest stage of them all.
