Jeff Bezos in the Hunt to Purchase Boston Celtics, NBA Want Franchise to Sell For $6 Billion: Bill Simmons
Jeff Bezos is looking to purchase a controlling stake in the Boston Celtics, after his failed pursuit of the NFL’s Washington Commanders. Bill Simmons has revealed that the NBA wants the Celtics to sell for $6 billion, and Bezos is one of the front runners being linked to the franchise.
Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship in June, but their owners the Grousbeck family are planning to sell the team. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon is reportedly among those who are interested in acquiring a controlling stake in the Celtics.
After a failed pursuit to take control of NFL’s Washington Commanders, Bezos has reportedly turned his attention to the Boston Celtics, American sports writer Bill Simmons revealed on his podcast on Monday.
"In the last few days there’s been some I think legitimate buzz about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics, and I think it’s real. I think he’s gonna be one of the suitors," Simmons stated in his podcast.
He also revealed that the NBA is hoping that the Celtics will sell for a mammoth $6 billion as the league is hoping to get that figure for their two expansion teams.
"It’s a crazy price, but they’re probably gonna get it. They want the $6 billion because they want expansion teams in Seattle and Vegas — and Mexico City’s kind of looming as the third team — but they want to get $6 billion apiece for the two franchises for expansion, which would mean a check of $400 million to every NBA owner, all 30," Simmons claimed.
Meanwhile, the Celtics ownership had revealed that want to sell the team "for estate and family planning considerations". The sale of the franchise is expected to take place in two phases, the majority stake will be sold this year, while the remaining stakes will be handed over in the year 2028.
Liverpool FC's owners Fenway Sports Group are also speculated to have an interest in acquiring the Boston Celtics as per the Post. Meanwhile, Wyc Grousbeck, the team's governor is planning to stay incharge until 2028 before the team is sold completely.
