- India might have a new ODI captain going ahead
Rohit Sharma-led India suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the final of the 2023 World Cup. The Men in Blue only managed a total of 240 and failed to defend it. India did have an upper hand at one stage but Australia bounced back after a century from Travis Head. The Kangaroos chased down the target in 43 overs with six wickets in hand.
With the next ODI World Cup four years away, the Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee could name a new captain on the road to the 2027 WC. India have a few contenders in their squad already. Here, we have a look at 3 players who can replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain -
KL Rahul is one of the strongest contenders to replace Rohit as the captain of the ODI team. Rahul has been part of the leadership group in the past and has captained the team in all three formats. Rahul lost his position as the vice-captain following his below-par form.
He made a strong return in the Asia Cup and played a key role in Team India's success in the 2023 WC. He could be rewarded with the ODI captaincy.
Hardik Pandya is another strong contender for the top job in white-ball cricket. The star all-rounder joined the leadership group in 2022 and was Rohit's deputy in the World Cup. Fitness has been an issue with Hardik in the past few years and he got ruled out of the World Cup due to an injury.
The selectors might only give the T20I captaincy to Pandya and announce a separate captain for the ODI team. A clear word will be out when the BCCI will announce the squad for the South Africa series. Pandya has been reportedly ruled out of the SA series.
How about Shubman Gill? Gill is young and can be the future leader that Team India needs. He has already cemented his spot in all three formats and is a legend in the making. Gill has the captaincy experience and has led India A cricket team. With the next World Cup four years away, the BCCI can surely give the charge to Gill and prepare him for the next challenge.
