- Gautam Gambhir's big statement on MS Dhoni is going viral.
- Gambhir said that had Dhoni not sacrified his spot in top-order after becoming captain, he would have scored many runs for Men in Blue.
- Dhoni played in 350 ODIs and scored 10,599 runs.
MS Dhoni is arguably the greatest Indian captain ever. The 42-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who was first appointed as the captain for the 2007 T20 World Cup, led the side in all three formats of the game for many years and won each and every trophy that was available. Under his captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, the Champions Trophy in 2013, the Asia Cup (ODI) in 2010, the Asia Cup (T20I) in 2016, and the ICC Test Mace as well in 2010 and 2011. Dhoni won the most matches as India captain, and he also enjoyed a successful stint with the Chennai Super Kings as skipper. Dhoni-led CSK to IPL title triumphs on five occasions and also two Champions League titles as well.
It will be very hard for anyone to go close to even Dhoni’s list of achievements in international and franchise cricket as captain, but according to former Indian opening batter Gautam Gambhir, if Dhoni had not been a captain of the Indian team and scarified his batting spot, he would have scored many more runs in cricket. Despite batting in the No. 5 and 6 positions in 83 and 129 ODIs, respectively, Dhoni has scored more than 10,000 ODI runs.
"Agar MS number 3 par ballebaazi karta Bharat ke liye, apne career mein, toh mera maanna hai ki vo bahut One-Day cricket mein record todta. Bahut. Kyuki jitni unki shamta thi... Kyuki sirf kaptaani... Bahut log kehte hai ki kaptaani mein MS ne bahut achieve kiya, bilkul achieve kiya, lekin as an individual, as a batter, mujhe lagta hai ki vo bahut zyada... Kaptaani ki wajeh se jo vo as a batter achieve kar sakta tha vo nahi kiya. Aur vo kaptaani ke saath aata bhi hai kyuki aap kayi baar kaptaani mein apne aap ko bhool ke team ko aage rakhna shuru kar dete hai. Aur aap apne aap ko sacrifice kar ke 6-7 number par ballebaazi karne utarte hai. Agar shayad vo kaptaan naa hota, agar MS kaptaan naa hota toh shayad No. 3 par ballebaazi karta aur I think jo bhi run banaye hai usse kayi zyada banata," he said while speaking during the Star Sports Show.
Here’s the video of Gautam Gambhir saying MS Dhoni would have scored many more runs if he had not become the captain of the Indian team:
Dhoni played in a total of 350 ODIs, in which, with the help of nine centuries and 73 half-centuries, he scored a total of 10,599 runs. His batting average in ODIs was 50.23, and the highest score was 183 not out against Sri Lanka in Jaipur, which he scored during the third ODI of the seven-match series.
Dhoni played his last ODI match on July 10, 2019, in Manchester during India’s semifinal match of the ODI World Cup 2019, and retired from international cricket a year later, on August 15, 2020.
