Explained: Why Did Abhishek Sharma Not Open The Batting For India In 3rd T20I vs Zimbabwe Despite Century

After a brilliant 46-ball century in the second T20I, Abhishek Sharma was demoted in the Indian batting for the third game of the series in Harare. India made four changes to their playing XI, with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Khaleel Ahmed replacing Riyan Parag, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, and Mukesh Kumar.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India made four changes to their playing XI
  • Abhishek Sharma lost his opening spot
  • Abhishek made a century in the second T20I
Despite scoring a splendid 46-ball century in the second T20I between India and Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Lub, Abhishek Sharma lost his opening spot in the third game on Wednesday (July 10) as the team made four changes to the playing XI.
For those unversed, after a shock defeat in the first T20I to Zimbabwe, the Men in Blue made a strong comeback with a 100-run victory in the second T20I. However, the return of the World Cup-winning trio of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube meant Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Sai Sudharsan.
Abhishek made his debut in the first T20I for India in the first game and had a horror start as he made a duck. However, Sharma made a strong comeback to be the quickest Indian (in terms of innings played) to score a century for the Men in Blue in the shortest format with a knock of 100 in 47 balls.

Why Is Abhishek Sharma Not Opening?

However, Abhishek was demoted in the batting order and lost his opening spot in the very next game for his heroic knock. This move was made as Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the team and was given his opening spot back. While there was a school of thought about Shubman Gill batting at number three, the Indian captain resisted the urge to change his own batting position. Sharma is likely to bat at number three.
The team has three natural openers, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to bat at number four. It is worth noting that Abhishek only started to open in the IPL in the 2022 season and started his career as a middle-order batter.
Abhishek got an India call-up on the back of some stunning form in the 2024 IPL, as he made 484 runs in 16 matches at an average of 32.26 and a stunning strike rate of 204.21.
