Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh reacted to Gautam Gambhir's appointment as head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach after the latter parted ways with team India following a win in the T20 World Cup. Gambhir will take over the duties from the India tour of Sri Lanka later this month. Gambhir became the front-runner to replace Dravid as head coach after he led KKR to a win in the IPL 2024. However, there were doubts if Gambhir would agree to the role given that he would have to drop the lucrative KKR mentor role, however, the former India cricketer had no hesitation in taking up the role, saying that coaching the national team would be the biggest honour. As per reports, Gautam Gambhir has asked the BCCI to sign Abhishek Nayar and Vinay Kumar as the batting and bowling coaches respectively.
Harbhajan congratulated Gambhir for the elite role and hoped his energy, passion and aggression would take Indian cricket forward.
"Congratulations @GautamGambhir for your new innings as Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team. I am sure that your experience, energy, passion, aggression and talent will steer the team on the path of excellence. My best wishes to you. Good luck buddy," wrote Harbhajan.
Meanwhile, Gambhir took to X and said that he is honoured to take over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team and he would do everything in his power to make a billion dreams come true. Gambhir's first major assignment as India's head coach will be the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.
"India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true," wrote Gambhir.
