Rohit Sharma missed the golden chance to join Kapil and MS Dhoni in the elusive list of Indian captains to have lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after the Men in Blue suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the hands of Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
India came into the game as hot favorites to lift the trophy for the third time in history, having won all 10 games in the tournament so far. However, Australia stepped up their game on the big day to be crowned world champions for the sixth time in history with a six-wicket win.
Kapil wrote a heartfelt post for Rohit after the game ended on his Instagram story. "Rohit, you are a master at what you do. You have a lot of success awaiting you. It's tough, I know, but keep your spirits up. India is with you," Kapil wrote.

Rohit was visibly in tears after the match ended, as India fell narrowly short of their dream. The Indian captain had a memorable tournament with the bat, as his aggressive style of batting in the powerplay proved to be an x-factor for Team India. Rohit was the second-highest run-getter in the tournament behind teammate Virat Kohli, with a tally of 597 runs in 11 innings at an average of 54.27 and a strike-rate of 125.94.
Rohit is among the greatest ODI players in history but has never lifted the World Cup trophy. He failed to make the squad in 2011 and was part of the team that suffered semi-final defeats in 2015 and 2019 at the hands of Australia and New Zealand.
For those unfamiliar, Kapil led the Indian team to victory in the 1983 World Cup against all odds when they beat the Mighty West Indians in the final at Lord's.
