T20 World Cup winning coach Rahul Dravid gave an example of his high stature after he refused the extra 2.5 crore bonus by the BCCI as a reward for India's T20 World Cup win. The BCCI announced a reward of INR 125 crores to the Indian squad and support staff after the team won the T20 World Cup 2024. The split was designed in such a way that Dravid and the 15 members of the squad would get INR 5 crores while the support staff was allotted 2.5 crores each. The selectors and the traveling members were given 1 crore each.
Dravid, however, denied taking the extra 2.5 crores and asked the BCCI to divide the sum equally between him and the support staff which included bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip and batting coach Vikram Rathore.
“Rahul wanted the same bonus money ( ?2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments,” a BCCI source said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
This is not the first time that Dravid made such a request. During the U-19 World Cup 2018, when Dravid was the head coach of the team, it was decided that Dravid would get 50 lakhs as a reward while the rest of the support staff would get INR 20 lakh each, however, Dravid requested the board to distribute the reward equally.
Meanwhile, Dravid parted ways with team India after leading them to a win in the T20 World Cup. He was replaced by former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir. The official appointment of Gambhir as India's head coach was confirmed by the BCCI on Tuesday.
"It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey," BCCI secretary Jay Shah posted from his official handle on X.
