Novak Djokovic created history as he defeated Carlos Alcaraz to win an elite gold at the Paris Olympics 2024. Alcaraz was the favourite heading into the contest and had a psychological advantage over the Serbian, having thrashed him at Wimbledon 2024, however, Djokovic played at the peak of his prowess and completed a stunning ‘Career Golden Slam’, a term given to players who have won all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold.
Alcaraz was shattered after the defeat and broke down in tears. It was not a one-sided affair as neither of the players was able to break the serve and both sets went into tiebreakers where
Djokovic pipped the 21-year-old. Alcaraz became the youngest to win a Silver Medal at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, legendary Sachin Tendulkar shared a piece of advice to Alcaraz after his defeat to Djokovic. Tendulkar said that Alcaraz needs to 'step up his serve to truly dominate for years on all surfaces'. The master blaster also congratulated Novak Djokovic for bagging the elite gold.
Meanwhile, Djokovic is not looking to slow down after ending the long wait for an Olympic gold and said that he wants to play the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Djokovic was elated after the win and called it the biggest sporting success of his career.
"This is probably the biggest sporting success I have ever had and the most special feeling," the 37-year-old Serb said. "I want to play in Los Angeles, I enjoy playing for my country in the Olympic Games, in the Davis Cup," he said after the win.
Djokovic also had high regards for Carlos Alcaraz and called him the best player in the world.
"Now at the age of 37 and facing a 21-year-old who is probably the best player in the world right now, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back, I can say that this is probably the biggest sporting success I have ever had," he added.
