- Sanju Samson has been dropped from the T20I squad for Australia series
- Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Men in Blue
- Ruturaj Gaikwad will assist Suryakumar in three matches
Sanju Samson has been dropped from the T20I squad for the Australia T20I series while Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who captained the team in the Asian Games, will assist Suryakumar in the first three T20Is. Shreyas Iyer will join the team for the last two games and take over vice-captaincy.
The biggest news coming from the team selection is the omission of Sanju Samson. Samson was expected to be given a consistent run on the road to the 2024 T20 World Cup. But the selectors have included Jitesh Sharma and Ishan Kishan as two wicketkeepers.
Jitesh earned his maiden India call-up after Samson got injured and was dropped after he returned. Jitesh made his India debut in the Asian Games. Samson will be in action in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he will lead Kerala.
Suryakumar will lead the team on the expected lines. With Hardik Pandya injured, Suryakumar was leading the race to be named captain. He joined the leadership group, in T20I cricket, earlier in 2023.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has retained his spot along with Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar among others. Axar Patel, who was ruled out of the 2023 World Cup due to an injury, is back in the squad. He proved his fitness in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Yuzvendra Chahal has been surprisingly ignored from the T20I squad as well. With 96 scalps, Chahal is India's highest wicket-taker in the shortest format. The selectors have retained Ravi Bishnoi.
Suryakumar, Iyer, Prasidh Krishna and Kishan are four players in the T20I squad who were part of the World Cup team. Kishan only played two matches while Prasidh remained on the bench.
The five T20Is of the series will be played on November 23, 26, 28, December 1 and 3 in Vizag, Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Nagpur and Bengaluru, respectively. There is still no official word on the T20I future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
