India's wait to lift the ODI World Cup trophy got extended by at least four more years as they suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Australia in the final of the 2023 World Cup. The same team had ended India's hopes in 2003 and 20 years later, Australia once again showed their prowess on big stages. India have faced Australia thrice in the finals of ICC events and have always fallen short.
The Indian cricketers and fans were heartbroken after the defeat. A day after the final, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav took to X (formerly Twitter) and poured their hearts out. "Been almost 16 hours but still hurts like it did last night. Sometimes giving your everything isn’t enough. We fell short of our ultimate goal but every step in this journey has been a testament to our team’s spirit and dedication. To our incredible fans, your unwavering support in our highs and lows means the world to us. This isn’t the end, it’s not over until we win. Jai Hind," wrote Shubman Gill.
"Heartbroken This will take some time to sink in. Together in win, and in loss. Nothing will take away what this team means to all of us We felt your immense love, support and energy everytime we stepped on the field. THANK YOU Congratulations to the Australian side," wrote Suryakumar.
Asked to bat first, India only managed a total of 240 on the board. Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) scored half-centuries while Rohit Sharma played a key knock of 47.
The pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami kept India afloat with three early wickets. But the Men in Blue struggled for wickets once the pitch became easy for batting. Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne added 192 runs for the fourth wicket to take the Kangaroos to the brink of a title win. Head departed for 137 while Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 58.
Head was bestowed with the Player of the Match award for his ton while Kohli was adjudged the Player of the Tournament. The former India captain piled up 765 runs in 11 matches.
India and Australia will continue their rivalry and square off in a five-match T20I series from November 23 to December 3. Suryakumar will reportedly lead the team in the series while the majority of the players who played the World Cup won't be part of the team.
