T20 World Cup 2024: Imam-ul-Haq Defends Babar Azam, Hits Back At Ahmed Shehzad- 'World Has Made Him A King'

Ahead of their must-win game, Pakistan opener Imam-ul Haq has come in support of skipper Babar Azam after he was slammed by Ahmed Shehzad for his unimpressive performance during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Imam, who is also one of the panelists in a Geo News show, alongside Shehzad and Imran Nazir, said that there should be an element of respect while commenting on the performance of the players or team.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan lost their first two matches of the T20 World Cup 2024 against USA and arch-rivals India. They bounced in the tournament with a seven-wicket win over Canada. The 2009 champions Pakistan will face Ireland in their final league stage game on Sunday in Florida.
Ahead of their must-win game, Pakistan opener Imam-ul Haq has come in support of skipper Babar Azam after he was slammed by Ahmed Shehzad for his unimpressive performance during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
Imam, who is also one of the panelists in 'Haarna Mana Hai', a Geo News show, alongside Shehzad and Imran Nazir, said that there should be an element of respect while commenting on the performance of the players or team.
"He's your captain, you don’t want to consider him as a captain, it's fine. The world has made him the king, you haven’t," said Imam.
The 28-year-old said that Babar should be respected for his services for the team while adding that the skipper's record from the last 20 matches should not overshadow his statistics over the last 250 matches.
"Is there anyone who has been the number one in Pakistan’s ODI ranking as well as in the T20I," said Imam.
"All of us have played for Pakistan and all of us have the right to criticise. None of us are satisfied with the team’s performance against India, but remember that the element of respect should not be ignored," he added.
Earlier, Shehzad had criticised Babar, calling him a "fake king". The left-handed batter also compared his own statistics with Babar during the show on Wednesday.
"I feel I could've done better than those stats. But your (Babar's) stats are worse than mine... You've faced 205 balls in power plays in T20 World Cups, but you haven't managed to hit one six!" the veteran cricketer said.
The 32-year-old Ahmed had also claimed that Babar destroyed the entire domestic structure.
"You destroyed the entire domestic structure. You sacrificed good performers in domestic cricket to adjust your friends in the team," he said.
Meanwhile, Imam also mentioned that Babar is not concerned with all the criticism he is receiving and does not have time to retaliate over it.
"We are here to talk about cricket..., I’m not interested in discussing Babar only, there are more things to discuss," he said.
