The summer transfer window has officially opened on June 14. Clubs from all over the world have been involved in some serious business as transfer negotiations have been a part and parcel of football these days.
If reports are to be believed, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been the subject of interest from Al Nassr. The Saudi Arabian outfit acquired the services of Cristiano Ronaldo in January 2023 followed by some of the most high profile names from the football circuit.
Van Dijk’s current Liverpool contract is scheduled to expire next summer and the player will be able to negotiate with any clubs in January 2025 should he stay at the Anfield next campaign. As per a report in Marca, Al Nassr hierarchy has sounded out the Dutch defender for a potential move.
They are ready to offer the player a lucrative contract in a bid to make him the highest paid defender in the world. Al Nassr finished second in the Saudi Pro League last season while they also lost the King Cup final to Al Hilal.
Ahead of the next season, they want to compete at the highest level and have prioritised the signing of the former Southampton defender. Apart from Ronaldo Al Nassr also have Sadio Mane, Otavio, Marcelo Brozovic, Aymeric Laporte, Talisca, Alex Telles and David Ospina in their ranks making them a heavy-duty team in Saudi Arabia.
Mohamed Salah was the subject of a mammoth bid from a Saudi Pro League club last summer but the Reds managed to put a hold on his departure. Liverpool had an underwhelming season as apart from the Carabao Cup they failed to put up a decent display throughout the campaign. In what was Jurgen Klopp’s last season they looked to be on course to another Premier League title but failed to maintain the momentum and Manchester City ran away with another title.
Van Dijk is currently busy with the Netherlands side preparing for the Euro 2024 and any decision will only be made after the tournament. Arne Slot replaced Klopp in Liverpool and it remains to be soon how he plans to utilise the defender next season.
