The Indian men's hockey team concluded its FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 campaign with a 2-3 defeat to hosts Great Britain on Sunday.
With this defeat, the Indian men’s team ended with 24 points from 16 games. Sukhjeet Singh (19’) and Harmanpreet Singh (36’) scored for India, while Phil Roper (1’), Jack Waller (37’), and Alan Forsyth (50’) netted for Great Britain.
Great Britain appeared more threatening in the initial exchanges, seizing an early lead just a minute into the first quarter through Phil Roper’s skillful finish from a sharp angle. The hosts maintained ball possession for most of the first quarter, frequently penetrating the Indian striking circle.
However, India regrouped after the shaky start and began to build momentum, pushing Great Britain back into their own half. Despite persistent attacks, India couldn't find the equalizer, ending the first quarter with Great Britain leading 1-0.
India maintained their offensive pressure in the second quarter. Their fast, counter-attacking style paid off when Sukhjeet Singh (19’) scored the equalizer.
After leveling the score, a careless foul by Sanjay in the circle awarded Great Britain a penalty stroke, but Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made an excellent save to deny Zachary Wallace. The teams went into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.
The third quarter was thrilling, with both teams launching rapid attacks and intensifying their offensive efforts. India earned a penalty stroke, which was confidently converted by Captain Harmanpreet Singh (36’), giving India a 2-1 lead. However, Great Britain quickly equalized within a minute as Jack Waller (37’) netted a fine field goal.
Buoyed by their scoring, the Indian team entered the fourth and final quarter with renewed vigor, relentlessly pressuring Great Britain with continuous attacks.
However, the hosts kept its defence tight. Alan Forsyth (50’) helped Great Britian take a 3-2 lead with 10 minutes to go. The match ended with hosts Great Britain winning 3-2.
