To play the game of Pickleball, it is essential for a player to learn how to hold a paddle, especially if you're new to pickleball. A good grip can not only improve control, flexibility, but also precision. Due to its simplicity and versatility, the continental grip (CG) is highly favoured for beginners.
This grip is often suggested for new players as it enables them to execute different shots without frequently changing their grip. Here, the index finger is above the level of the thumb to get the most versatility.
Another advantage of this grip is that it allows for a relaxed wrist, which can help beginners avoid injury and fatigue.
While the CG is a good starting point, but it does have some limitations. The main problem occurs when a player is hitting the ball with topspin. Topsin requires a neutral paddle face and a higher swing path, which can be difficult to achieve with the CG.
Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport and to master the sport, a player also needs to have the knowledge of five basic things, which are as follows -
Footwork: In pickleball, players need to be nimble on their feet and able to move and change direction quickly.
Core Skills: Mastering pickleball also requires a consistent and powerful forehand and backhand. Along with that, one needs regular practice with these strokes, which in turn gives accuracy and control.
Hand-Eye Coordination: Pickleball also needs sharp reflexes. This allows players to hit precise shots with control.
Strategic Decisions: Understanding the game requires the strategic placement of a player while keeping the opponent in mind. This allows a player on the court to take well-placed shots.
Basic Rules Of Pickleball
Serve: The serve needs to be underhand, and the ball must be served below the waist. It must also be executed diagonally to the opponent’s service court, and the server must stand behind the baseline at the time of serving.
Non-Volley Zone (NVZ): There is a designated “Kitchen” (non-volley zone) near the net. Players are only allowed to hit the ball if it bounces inside the NVZ. Standing on the NVZ and hitting a volley will be considered a fault.
Rules: The scoring rules state that a game is generally played to 11 points, and the winning side must keep a two-point margin. Both the server and the receiver side need to let the ball bounce once before returning it to the other side. The server also needs to call out the score at the time of the service, and upon his failure, the game needs to be replayed.
