'Don't Know What To Say Right Now': Carlos Alcaraz Reacts After Being Shocked By Botis van de Zandschulp
Glancing in the direction of his coach, 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, ace Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz pointed his right index finger at his temple, then wagged that finger, as if to say, “I’m not thinking straight.” It was evident as he looked entirely out of sorts against an unseeded opponent.

Ace Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has said that he was rendered speechless after his loss to Botis van de Zandschulp's in the second round of the US Open on Friday. He suffered a stunning straight-set loss to the Dutchman, even after being touted as one of the favourites to reclaim the trophy at the Flushing Meadows, having won it in 2022.
But on Friday, Alcaraz looked far away from his best and Zandschulp took full advantage of the dip in form. He had begun his campaign with a win over Australia's Li Tu but in that match as well, he had lost one set to his unheralded opponent.
Alcaraz had admitted after the first-round match that Tu did manage to surprise him a little bit, but he survived the challenge, only to be ousted in the second round.
On Friday, Alcaraz’s 15-match Grand Slam unbeaten streak was over with a sloppy 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Zandschulp. The result eliminated the pre-tournament men’s favourite and was hard to predict, given his standing in the game.
Alcaraz won the French Open in June and Wimbledon last month to raise his career total to four Grand Slam titles, including taking the title at Flushing Meadows in 2022.
Earlier this month, Alcaraz bagged silver at the Paris Olympics, losing to Novak Djokovic in the final. But Friday's result stunned not just fans, but the youngster too.
"I don't know what to say right now. "First of all, he played great. He played really good tennis. I thought he was going to give me more points, more free points. He did not make a lot of mistakes that I thought he was going to do," Alcaraz said.
"I did not know how to manage that or how to deal with it. I could not increase my level. I think my level stayed at the same point the whole match. It was not enough to win the match or to give myself the chance to get into the match or try to give myself chances," Alcaraz added.
