Veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Mathew Ebden lost their round of 16 men's doubles match against Mate Pavic of Croatia and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.
Bopanna and Ebden were far from their best in the first set. They fell behind in the start and could not recover from there.
The Indo-Australian duo tried to make a comeback in the second set, but the pair Pavic and Arevalo were clinical and eventually won the match 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Notably, Bopanna and Ebden, who began the season with a bang by lifting the Australian Open trophy, were favorites to win this round of 16 clash at Monte Carlo Masters. But, they had a disappointing day and crashed out of the tournament.
Sumit Nagal vs Holger Rune Match Suspended Owing To Rain
Star Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal' second round clash against Holger Rune of Denmark has been suspended due to rain.
The 26-year-old Nagal was trailing against seventh seed Rune, when rain led to a suspension of the contest.
Holger was dominating the match before the rain interruption. The Denmark player was leading the Indian 6-3, 2-1 (40/Ad) on Court Rainier III, when the heavens opened up.
Notably, Nagal, who has been in great form in 2024, is having a historic run at the ongoing Monte Carlo Masters. Coming through qualifying, he won three straight matches against higher-ranked players in a span of three days.
He first defeated eight seeded Flavio Cobolli in the qualifier, and then overcame third seeded Facundo Diaz Acosto to sail into the main draw of the prestigious tournament.
The star Indian player then registered a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the first round.
With his victory against World No.38 Arnaldi, Nagal became the first Indian to win a main draw match at the Monte Carlo Masters.
He also became the first from the country to win a main draw match at one of the three Masters 1000 events - the series that started in 1990 - held on clay.
Nagal recently achieved a career-high ranking of No. 93 in the ATP rankings.
