Why Asus needs to up its game? Is Asus Phone ROG 8 Pro worth its price? Read on.
Asus unveiled its new gaming smartphone – the ROG Phone 8 Pro – during the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2024) and the phone has also been launched in India. The price though, makes us wonder - WHY? The ROG Phone 8 Pro, with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB storage variant, is priced at Rs 94,999. That's more than the launch price of Samsung Galaxy S23+, iPhone 15 and almost double than what the iQOO 12 costs in the country.
It doesn't end here. The top model of the phone costs Rs 1,19,999 – more than what the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra may cost next week. So, it brings us to the obvious question - who is buying the ROG Phone 8 Pro at this price? Before I try to answer that, a quick look at some of its specifications.
Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro Specs And Features
The Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro features a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display with a variable refresh rate of 1-120Hz LTPO and up to 2500 nits brightness. It is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance. After the iQOO 12, it is the second phone to bring the power of the Octa-Core Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 4nm chipset to India. In software terms, it comes with Android 14 with ROG UI out-of-the-box.
It's not just about gaming and power; the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro features a 50MP rear camera with a 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX890 sensor, coupled with a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP 3x telephoto sensor. For selfies, it has a 32MP front-facing camera with a 90° FoV. Rare to find these days is the 3.5mm audio jack, which Asus maintained even with the ROG Phone 8. Everything is powered by a 5500mAh battery with 65W HyperCharge fast charging and 15W Qi wireless charging.
Asus Needs To Up Its GameWe don't doubt the capabilities of the ROG Phone 8 Pro. It is one of the most powerful phones to launch in India so far. It is packed with some interesting features and is every gamer's delight. But, even all of this doesn't justify the insane price tag. Consider this - there was a time when the Asus ROG Phone 4 came at a starting price of Rs 42,990 in India with a powerful chipset of its time for gaming, along with a unique design and features. Since then, the Asus ROG Phone 5, ROG 6, ROG 7, and ROG 8 have witnessed major price jumps.
Mostly, it's an overkill. Even phones like iQOO 12 and the upcoming OnePlus 12 will feature the same chipset. Both these phones are more than capable of running most high-end titles with ease. Leave that, if you are an avid gamer, even the iPhone 15 Plus or iPhone 15 Pro (which may cost almost the same as ROG Phone 8 Pro) will deliver equally powerful performance.
So, at this price, the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro is truly overpriced! It’s high time Asus needs to up its game to keep up with the competition.
