As the Future Investment Initiative (FII) begins its 8th conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, business tycoon Elon Musk cautioned that while artificial intelligence could bring revolutionary changes, there is a "10-20% chance" that it could lead to unintended consequences. Responding to the futurist Peter Diamandis about his predictions that AI is growing "as fast as 100 times per year," Musk reiterated that AI is “getting 10 times better per year, which is, four years from now that would mean 10,000 times better, so maybe 100,000.” He speculated its timeline is to reach human capability within a few years in the future.
Further on, he speculated that by the end of the decade, AI systems would have the intellectual capacity equivalent to the combined brains of all humanity, which puts extreme weight on the ethics and safety aspect of this newly birthed tech.
During his interview, Musk reiterated the exponential pace at which AI capabilities are evolving, hinting at a future where AI will perform not only the work that is distinctively done by individuals, but eventually undertake combined human activity. Musk said that this transition could occur within three to five years. He went on to assert that AI development is currently progressing at "100 times" the previously imagined speed, thereby opening the door to the realisation of systems that tackle complex problems and execute tasks previously conceived that only humans could do.
Musk provided an update on his own AI company, xAI, which is working on a supercomputer called Colossus that incorporates Nvidia GPUs in huge numbers. Colossus has over 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips, and Musk said he intends to double that amount with the new H200 units. Colossus is therefore the largest AI computing cluster operated by an individual company and, thus, sets it apart from rival supercomputers owned by entities like OpenAI and Meta. Musk makes clear that xAI's mission captures the ultimate goal – to create AI that "loves humanity" and gives priority to human well-being.
Other notable guests at the FII8 included Shou Chew, TikTok CEO, Ruth Porat from Alphabet, Dr. Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google. The FII8 also announced the launch of the AI Inclusive Initiative – a global program meant to ensure fair AI adoption in emerging markets through partnerships between the tech industry, policymakers, and educational institutions.
Musk's address left the audience with a combination of optimism and caution, urging the responsible development of AI for the best of humanity. “Going forward, we need AI that loves humanity,” he said, reaffirming that xAI is dedicated to safeguarding the future of AI in the best interest of humanity.
