TRAI Will Block Harmful Links In SMS

Indian mobile users will only receive SMS messages having verified web links, thanks to new regulations enforced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Starting from today, this mandatory rule applies to all telecom operators and businesses. This step has been taken to address the growing issue of scammers using malicious links to target users.
Initially set for a September rollout, the regulation's implementation was delayed to allow telecom companies more time for compliance. The rule requires telecom operators to whitelist URLs, APKs, and OTT platform links before they are allowed in SMS messages. By adding this layer of protection, users are shielded from the risk of falling prey to phishing attacks, fraud, or phone hacking.
Despite its benefits, this rule might cause some inconvenience for users who rely on SMS for one-time passwords (OTPs), frequently used in banking, payment services, and delivery confirmations. These OTPs are crucial for completing secure online transactions swiftly.
Currently, over 3,000 registered senders, including businesses, have already whitelisted more than 70,000 web links, with more expected to follow. Given the complexity of the regulation, it may take time for the system to run seamlessly.
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to prevent users from unknowingly clicking on dangerous links that could compromise personal data or lead to financial loss. While the deadline for compliance was pushed back once, further delays seem unlikely, meaning users and businesses alike will need to adapt to this new security measure promptly.
