Google Launches Gemini Live For Android Phones, To Compete With ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode

Gemini Live
Google has introduced a new conversational feature for its Gemini chatbot, named Gemini Live, as a direct competitor to OpenAI's advanced voice mode for ChatGPT. Unlike the traditional input-output model, Gemini Live allows users to engage in free-flowing conversations with the chatbot, which can be paused and resumed at any time. Additionally, users have the option to choose the voice they want for the chatbot before starting a conversation.
During a recent event for the Pixel 9 series, Google demonstrated Gemini Live, showcasing its ability to handle real-time interactions with minimal lag. In one demo, a Google executive asked the chatbot for tips on creating a science experiment with their child. The chatbot responded promptly, providing a natural, human-like conversation experience. The feature also supports hands-free use, making it more convenient for users on the go.
Google envisions Gemini Live as a personal assistant that users can chat with about new ideas or practice conversations. Rick Osterloh, Senior VP of Google Devices and Services, hinted at the feature's advanced capabilities, including conducting in-depth research and generating research reports complete with sources in a Google Doc.
Gemini Live is available starting today with support for 10 new voices. However, the feature is not free; it is part of the Gemini Advanced subscription, which costs $19.99 per month and offers access to Google’s most powerful Gemini 1.5 Pro model. Initially, the feature is rolling out to Android devices, with iOS support expected in the coming weeks.
This move by Google comes shortly after OpenAI began offering its advanced voice mode for ChatGPT, but only to a limited number of users with a ChatGPT Plus subscription, which also costs $20 per month.
