The Indian government is gearing up to collaborate with leading IT companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL, and Tech Mahindra to spearhead the development of software for quantum technologies. This initiative falls under the National Quantum Mission (NQM), aimed at accelerating research in quantum technology within the country.
Ajai Chowdhry, co-founder of HCL and chairman of the mission governing board of the National Quantum Mission, revealed plans to involve major software companies in quantum technology research. According to Moneycontrol, Chowdhry emphasised the need for extensive research on quantum algorithms, highlighting the pivotal role of these companies in the endeavour.

National Quantum Mission

Established in April last year with a budget exceeding Rs 6,000 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2030-31, the National Quantum Mission seeks to elevate research and development efforts in quantum technology. This initiative aims to strengthen innovation in the quantum technology ecosystem, supporting Indian startups and scientists working in this cutting-edge field.
Under the mission's framework, four research hubs dedicated to quantum hardware, encryption, sensors, and materials will be established. These hubs, slated to commence operations by August 2024, will be housed within premier research institutions like TIFR and IISc.

Quantum Computing

Quantum computing harnesses the principles of quantum physics to solve complex problems that traditional computers struggle with. By leveraging quantum phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, quantum computers offer unparalleled computational capabilities.
While still in its emerging stages, quantum computing holds immense promise across various sectors, including medicine, materials science, and artificial intelligence. Union Minister Jitendra Singh hailed the government's quantum leap into the realm of quantum technology, emphasising India's unique positioning in this field. Unlike previous endeavours where India joined elite clubs after other countries had made significant strides, the National Quantum Mission marks India's entry into quantum technology research alongside global leaders.

Future Prospects

Quantum technology is set to revolutionise multiple sectors, including communication, IT, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, finance, and energy. By encouraging native capabilities in quantum technology development, the Indian government aims to support the country's self-reliance while driving innovation and economic growth.
